In a collaborative study published in Development, the teams of Vincent Bertrand and Pierre-François Lenne analyze the role played by Wnt ligands in the divisions that generate neurons during nervous system development. Using time-controlled perturbations and quantitative imaging, they established that Wnt ligands regulate the shape of neuronal progenitors and their asymmetric divisions in an instructive manner. Wnt ligands act via a Frizzled receptor and an APC protein that is asymmetrically localized at the cortex of progenitors and unequally inherited by the daughter cells.
